Studying Spanish in Granada

Granada is known in Spain as one of the best university towns, with a great student atmosphere and access to an incomparable wealth of history and culture. The city is renown throughout the world for the Alhambra; its large, intricately decorated Moorish fortress, visited by millions of tourists each year.

Geographically, Granada is well positioned in eastern Andalusia at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, one of Spain’s best ski resorts. During the summer, the coast is conveniently located at an hour drive from the city.

It’s also within an hour and a half drive of Málaga and the Costa del Sol, probably Spain’s most popular vacation destination, and about a two hour drive from Seville, the cultural capital of Andalusia. Other famous destinations nearby include Almeria, Cadiz, Cordoba and Gibraltar.

With a population of 237,000, Granada is not too large to feel impersonal and at the same time offers all of the amenities of a modern city. It’s easy to get around by bus (the transportation system is quite efficient), and the city is also very pedestrian-friendly. Many parks and gardens make Granada a truly green city.

The student population of the University of Granada (40,000) gives the city an active and vibrant student life. Much of Granada’s bars, restaurants and clubs, as well as entertainment venues such as theaters and concerts, cater to the city’s students. For those who can balance study and party, excellent nightlife awaits.

All in all, studying Spanish in Granada is an excellent option because of its importance as a university city and a world class cultural-historical center, which makes it easy for students to further immerse themselves in Spain’s language and culture outside of class.
